MEET THE FOUNDER

Linda Guan Hongwen

For more than three decades, Linda has dedicated her career to the art of handcrafted frame making.

Her journey began in 1991, when she entered the world of traditional frame making under the guidance of Mr. Thomas Freitag, a craftsman deeply rooted in the tradition of German water gilding. Through years of close collaboration, Linda developed a profound understanding of genuine gold leaf craftsmanship, from meticulous preparation to the refined techniques required to create timeless gilded frames.

Her pursuit of exceptional craftsmanship continued through her collaboration with Mr. Filippo Orsi, from a historic Florentine framing family. Through this partnership, Linda gained further insight into the refined traditions of Italian frame making, including the art of Patina finishing and handcrafted surface treatments.

The knowledge and techniques passed down through these two European traditions — German water gilding and Italian Patina — became the foundation of Linda’s lifelong dedication to bespoke art framing.

Throughout her career, Linda has created handcrafted frames for luxury hotels, museums, galleries and private collections internationally, while collaborating with respected industry partners including Larson-Juhl and Michaels.

In 2020, Linda founded GHW·ARTS with a vision to preserve these rare traditions while creating contemporary bespoke frames that honour the artwork, the collector, and the space in which each piece lives.

Italian Patina

The Beauty of Time

Patina is not simply an aged finish. It is a decorative language developed over centuries in Italian workshops, where colour, texture and subtle imperfections are layered by hand to evoke the quiet beauty that only time can create.

Every surface is built gradually through repeated applications, sanding, colouring and hand-finishing. No two frames are ever identical. The slight variations in tone and texture are not flaws, but the unmistakable signature of genuine craftsmanship.

Patina allows a frame to feel as though it has always belonged to the artwork, creating depth, warmth and character impossible to achieve through industrial production.

German Water Gilding

The Brilliance of Genuine Gold

Water gilding is one of the most refined gilding techniques in European decorative arts.

Using genuine 23-karat German gold leaf, each layer is carefully applied by hand over a meticulously prepared surface before being burnished to achieve a luminous depth that cannot be replicated by metallic paint or imitation finishes.

The process demands patience, precision and years of experience. From preparing the ground to laying the gold and polishing every detail, each stage contributes to the distinctive brilliance and richness that have defined museum-quality frames for centuries.

Real gold does not simply shine. It reflects light with warmth, depth and permanence.
